The City of Tucson Mayor & Council voted 6-0 to approve the rezoning of Casita Village at La Mariposa — a 162-unit rental casita community on Houghton Road near La Mariposa Resort. The project will be developed by Philip Amos, Philip Aries and Kirk Saunders of SAUNDERS & AMOS L.L.C., with site design, entitlements, and landscape architecture by The Planning Center and engineering and hydrology by Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. The plan preserves over 30 acres of open space including the Agua Caliente Wash, which will be dedicated to Pima County Regional Flood Control, and a new recharge basin that expands the Isabella Lee Natural Preserve.

The successful rezoning is the result of nearly 4 years of collaboration with the City of Tucson Planning & Development Services, Paul Cunningham and the Ward 2 staff, Eric Shepp of the Pima County Regional Flood Control District, and FEMA to address flooding and other neighborhood concerns.

This project is a win for housing, the environment, and smart growth — helping Tucson address its housing shortfall while protecting and enhancing our natural resources.
