Last week, the Tucson Mayor and Council unanimously approved a major amendment to the Los Reales Planned Area Development (PAD)—paving the way for the LosRealesSustainabilityCampus.

Over the past two years, The Planning Center has had the privilege of working alongside the City of Tucson‘s Environmental Services Department to reimagine the Los Reales landfill.

What started in 2006 as a plan for long-term landfill operations has evolved into a bold vision for sustainability—turning waste into a resource, fueling economic opportunity, and creating spaces that serve our community for generations.

The new Los Reales Sustainability Campus PAD will bring together:

✅ Waste reclamation and resource recovery
✅ Eco-commerce and green jobs
✅ Community education and resources
✅ Expanded open space and recreation areas

All of this supports Tucson’s ambitious climate goals and transforms the way we think about waste management.

A huge thank you to the City of Tucson for allowing us to be part of your team on this transformative project. We’re proud to help shape a future where sustainability and community go hand-in-hand.
